Derby Girls Academy graduate Tarlie Bandy had always wanted to be a police officer.

But the mother of two put her dreams on hold until her children were settled at school.

When Tarlie started at Derby Police Station she was the Kimberley district’s first Aboriginal police cadet.

A Yamatji woman from Geraldton, Tarlie told ABC Perth that she believed she could make strong connections within Derby’s Aboriginal community.

“I think that me being an Aboriginal person, I feel they’re more culturally comfortable to come and speak to me about certain things that they wouldn’t speak to with other officers.”

Tarlie also hopes she will inspire other Aboriginal people to join WA Police, saying she loves coming to work every day. “This is probably the best choice I have ever made,” she said.
