­­­Larissa Prosser has won the school-based trainee of the year at the Apprentice Employment Network’s Awards of Excellence.

The Geraldton Girls Academy graduate was presented with the award at a ceremony attended by the Minister for Education and Training Sue Ellery and Steve Irons, the Federal Assistant Minister for Vocational Education, Training and Apprenticeships.

Larissa has been juggling her schoolwork with a certificate II in business through ANZ Bank, with the support of Trainwest and Maxima Group, and has obviously done an incredible job.

The award was the latest in a string of accomplishments for the accomplished student, who also won the excellence in vocational education and training award at Geraldton Senior High School’s valedictory ceremony and was named the Rising Star at the Maxima Graduation Awards.

Julie O’Malley, who is in career development at the high school, said it has been a pleasure to guide Larissa through the traineeship over the past two years and encourage her to celebrate her successes.

“The confidence that Larissa has gained in her abilities and self-worth is very evident and has been acknowledged by all of her teachers,” she wrote in her award submission.

She said Larissa was a very humble person who had demonstrated gratitude for the chance she had been given throughout her traineeship.

Nadene Carr, from Maxima Training Group, was Larissa’s consultant for the traineeship. “My job is it to make sure our employees meet the expectations of the host employer, so I follow up to see how they are going and whether they need anything,” she said.

“Larissa was a dream all the way through her traineeship; she was very determined. She was very quiet, still is really, though this has brought her out of her shell.”

Nadene says Maxima regularly talks to organisations like Girls Academy to find the right students for traineeships around Western Australia. Regular school attendance is important because they need to be able to demonstrate to host employers that the student is reliable.

 “But if their attendance isn’t high (at school) there might be a reason for it, so if we know that we can work around it,” she said.

We can’t wait to see others follow in Larissa’s footsteps. The high achiever is now embarking on a career in banking with the ANZ – we wish her every success.
